CBD works by acting on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a system which was discovered in the early 1990s and has so far been found to regulate a range of bodily functions such as sleep, mood, appetite, memory and reproduction and fertility. The ECS functions on its own, independent of cannabis use utilising CBD-like molecules produced naturally by the body.
Endocannabinoids
Endocannabinoids are endogenous cannabinoids produced by the body. There have been two identified so far – anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG) which can bind to the endocannabinoid receptors in either the central or peripheral nervous system to aid the regulation of numerous processes to contribute to homeostasis. One example of this is if something throws off your body’s natural balance such as an injury or a fever, the ECS kicks in to help your body return to its optimum state.
How does CBD interact with the ECS?
Unlike THC (the part that gets your high), CBD does not bind directly to cannabinoid receptors. It is still not clear how it works but it is thought to work by inhibiting the breakdown of endocannabinoids.
How to prevent cold and flu
When fighting a virus or bacterial infection, it is important to maintain full health in the body. Your body needs proper sleep, proper nutrition, and low cortisol levels to enable your immune system to work at full strength. CBD has proven to reduce anxiety and stress levels, therefore lowering cortisol, and also improving sleep in many people by effect. There are also many vitamins and nutrients in the hemp plant that can help regulate the body and keep it strong and healthy such as terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, Gamma Linoleic Acid and chlorophyll which can all help to fight off colds and flu.
